The Castle

The castle is situated on its own grounds in the lee of the second highest hill (260 m.) of the vendée. The town of Pouzauges is situated on the other side of the hill with a view to the west. The castle with its 12 ha park was owned by a nobel family from 1630 until 1992. Countess Armand still owns 700 ha of land, including small farms surrounding the castle. In 1992 some parts of the castle burned down, the current owner bought the castle at the end of the year 1994 and immediately began with restoring it. Part of the castle is habitable since early 1999. The outhouses are contained with various apartments with original features.

Children

There are several facilities for children on the grounds of the castle:
Heated Swimming pool (6-10 mtr, 1,5 mtr. deep), seesaw, slide, swings, sand box, tree house, ping pong table, bike, fishpond and verious other toys.

More History

Further along the outhouses stands a small chapel dating back to 1517. Next door, there is an orangery from where you have a beautiful view through te valley. The atmosphere and the view are unique, tranquillity is characteristic of the French countryside. As is often the case, the castle is steeped in history, for example "l' Histoire de faux monnaie". As a result of this, the castle was sold in 1630. During the revolution, the oldest castle, now the largest of the outhouses, was destroyed. The family, from which the major of Pouzauges often came, built the castle in the 15th century style in 1840. The remains of an extensive system of secret tunnels was discovered during the construction. These tunnels probably originated in the time that the Vikings raided the coasts.
